In Loving Memory of the African Priest Who Touched Lives
(1957 – 2015)
I have enjoyed being a priest
-if called to do it over (again),
I will jump at it.

“I have enjoyed being a priest – if called to do it over (again), I will jump at it.”

Those words of reflection from Father Denis Osuagwu, CMF show the joy it was for him to embrace his priestly ministry. Through his simple and jovial lifestyle, he touched the hearts of many, comforted the downtrodden, consoled the mourning and reached out to the needy. Father Denis cherished hard work, service and industry.

About Rev. Fr. Dr. Denis A. Osuagwu

Rev. Fr. Dr. Denis Osuagwu was born on September 10, 1957 to the late Marcellus Osuagwu and Mrs. Rosanna Osuagwu. He was ordained priest on July 15, 1989, and his first Mass took place the next day on July 16 at Immaculate Heart Parish, Alike-Obowo. When he finished secondary school in 1978, priesthood was not among his options. He had comtemplated studying medicine, engineering and mass communications, studying overseas, etc. He was working as a lab attendant at Mercy Hospital Umulogho, which was when his desire to become a priest surfaced. Providentially, he met Fr. Anthony Ibeawuchi (then a seminarian), who directed him to the Claretians at Maryland Nekede. On a fateful rainy day in July 1979, he left home for the Claretian Missionaries.

After about 3 months of postulancy, he along with 3 others were received into the novitiate on October 23, 1979. On November 8, 1980, he made his first profession along with 13 others.

He completed theological studies in 1988 without priestly ordination but rather assigned to work at Claretian Institute of Philosophy, Maryland, Nekede. On August 20, 1988, he was ordained deacon and on July 15, 1989 ordained Louisiana. After working for 11 years as a pastor and obtaining his doctorate, he left the US on January 17, 2011.
